The powerful explosions that rocked the port of Beirut on Tuesday left "people dead and injured", the Lebanon's National News Agency reported.

Georges Kettaneh, the president of the Lebanese Red Cross, referred to "hundreds of wounded" in a statement on Lebanese LBC television, adding: "We are overwhelmed by phone calls."


Lebanon's Prime Minister Hasan Diab has declared Wednesday a day of mourning, and President Michel Aoun called for "urgent" defence council talks.

General Security chief Abbas Ibrahim has said this might have been caused by explosive materials confiscated years ago and stored at the city's port.

"It appears that there is a warehouse containing material that was confiscated years ago, and it appears that it was highly explosive material," the senior security official said, adding that an investigation would be launched into the explosion

Man, 25, rapes Ogun septuagenarian in her sleep.

Men of the Ogun State Police Command, on Wednesday, arrested a 25-year-old man, Wasiu Bankole, for forcefully having carnal knowledge of a septuagenarian, while she was asleep. The suspect was apprehended 24 hours after allegedly committing the crime at Abule Lemode, Ijoko, in the Ado-Odo/Ota Local Government Area of the state. The Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Abimbola Oyeyemi, disclosed this in a statement on Thursday. Oyeyemi said the suspect was arrested following a report by the victim at the Agbado Division in Sango-Ota. The PPRO stated that the victim complained that her attacker broke into her room around 8pm on Tuesday, and forcefully had carnal knowledge of her, while she was asleep. The victim was, however, rescued by one of her neighbours, who ran into her room and saved her from the rapist.
