What was the point of a green card for referees? It was a green light for medics. When there was an injury, the referee would get it out and the medics will come onto the pitch. But IFAB, who controlled the laws of the game, abolished it in 2003. Now the referee just has to make a signal with their hands, expect the green card has made a come back to pitches.
The green card has a new use in Italy, it was reintroduced by the Italian serie B in 2016. It serves as a means to reward a player's fair play. Admitting that it wasn't a foul play? Or a corner? Green card!, Separating two fighting players? Green card! Christano galano was the first player to receive a green card, he admitted to a referee that it wasn't a corner after his shot.
But what's the point of the green card? Well... Nothing really, it's just symbolic! They are definitely ways in which it could be improved, like cancelling out a yellow card. In France, the green card can lead to a reward! There is a tally in youth competition and more than 3 green cards equate to a new pair of boots! But another type of green card was introduced at the 2018 conifa World cup. This time the green card was used as a disciplinary sanction, it's a similar punishment to a red card, the player is sent off but the team can bring on another player. It's a red card with a second chance.
So what do you think, should the green card be reintroduced to our modern football? Please do leave a comment, like and share and also follow me for more updates. Thanks.
